The Forest Department has uncovered a suspected wildlife trafficking attempt after recovering a leopard skin from a man during an operation near Matigara More in Siliguri. The raid was conducted late Saturday night on Asian Highway-10 by a team from the Sukna Range after they noticed a suspicious individual near the bus stand.
During the search operation, forest officials recovered a leopard skin from the accused’s bag and immediately detained him. Preliminary interrogation indicated that the wildlife item was allegedly being transported to Nepal as part of a smuggling operation. Officials from the Darjeeling Wildlife Division have launched an investigation into the matter to determine whether a larger network is involved. Authorities believe the smuggling attempt could be linked to an international wildlife trafficking chain.
A case has been registered against the accused under the Wildlife Protection Act and he will be produced before the Kurseong Court. Officials have not disclosed the identity of the suspect as investigations are ongoing.
